Item Shifting the Collection Development Mindset: Moving from Traditional Journal Subscriptions to Transformative Agreements ( American Library Association , 2024-01 ) McLain, Rachelle ; McKelvey, Hannah Show more This article discusses the experiences of two librarians at Montana State University in negotiating, executing, and managing seven transformative, or read & publish, agreements. The authors offer their perspectives of transformative agreements and share the hurdles and wins they have had along the way, to help others decide if these types of agreements make sense to implement at their own libraries. Item Capacity at All-Way Stop Control Intersections: Case Study ( SAGE Publications , 2023-08 ) Al-Kaisy, Ahmed ; Doruk, Dorukhan Show more This paper presents an empirical investigation into the capacity of all-way stop-controlled (AWSC) intersections. Video data was collected over four days at an AWSC intersection site in Bozeman, Montana. The site is characterized by single-lane approaches and high level of vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Using strict protocols, video records were processed at the individual vehicle level and several information metrics were extracted for each vehicle in the data set on all approaches. Study results indicate that the total intersection capacity at the study site varied between 400 and 1,400 vehicles per hour. The study suggests that the wide range of capacity observations is largely associated with the pedestrian crossing activity at the study site. Statistical tests confirmed that both pedestrian crossing activity and the level of conflict have significant effects on intersection capacity at the 95% confidence level. For movement type, the right-turn movement was not found to have a significant effect on intersection capacity while left-turn movement was found to negatively affect the intersection capacity. The results presented in this paper offer valuable information on AWSC intersection capacity, given the limited amount of information in the literature and the dated nature of those empirical observations. Item Community Partnership Strategies to Facilitate Service-Learning Opportunities in PETE K–12 Schools ( Taylor & Francis , 2024-03 ) Egan, Cate A. ; Orendorff, Karie L. ; Merica, Christopher B. Show more University and local K-12 school partnerships are essential for physical education teacher education (PETE) programs, as they provide valuable avenues for practicum and student teaching experiences. In addition, practicums within K-12 schools provide valuable opportunities for PETE students to develop physical activity leadership skills. Thus, it is essential to create sustainable and mutually beneficial university and school partnerships. One way to do so is through service-learning, which focuses on equal partnerships between K-12 schools, the university, and other parties involved (e.g., university students, community members). However, it can be challenging to develop meaningful field and service-learning experiences for pre-service teachers (PST) due to a myriad of reasons (e.g., location, resources). This article discusses strategies for community, K-12 school, and university partnerships using a service-learning approach. Recommendations for developing sustainable partnerships are also provided. Item A Grassroots Initiative to Engage Classroom Teachers in Increasing Physical Activity ( Human Kinetics , 2024-03 ) Orendorff, Karie L. ; Merica, Christopher B. ; Egan, Cate A. Show more Purpose: Classroom-based physical activity (PA) provides students the opportunity to achieve PA recommendations. However, limited research has examined grassroots efforts for classroom-based PA. The purpose of this study was to share the story of a grassroots initiative to increase PA during school, titled the 150 Project. Methods: Narrative inquiry was used to draw on participants shared experiences to bring the story into existence. Individual interviews were conducted (n = 4, project developers; n = 9, elementary classroom teachers). Interview data were coded to reveal connections and relationships between the participants’ stories to form a narrative. Results: The narrative is told by explaining (a) challenge (achieve PA recommendations), (b) action steps (project design), (c) outcomes (student, teacher, and school), and (d) moral of the story (need valid data and increased advocacy for during-school PA). Discussion/Conclusion: The 150 Project successfully trained classroom teachers to increase PA and advocate for PE, but the project is unsustainable without additional support systems. Item Inference of Transit Passenger Counts and Waiting Time Using Wi-Fi Signals ( Western Transportation Institute , 2021-08 ) Videa, Aldo ; Wang, Yiyi Show more Passenger data such as real-time origin-destination (OD) flows and waiting times are central to planning public transportation services and improving visitor experience. This project explored the use of Internet of Things (IoT) Technology to infer transit ridership and waiting time at bus stops. Specifically, this study explored the use of Raspberry Pi computers, which are small and inexpensive sets of hardware, to scan the Wi-Fi networks of passengers’ smartphones. The process was used to infer passenger counts and obtain information on passenger trajectories based on Global Positioning System (GPS) data. The research was conducted as a case study of the Streamline Bus System in Bozeman, Montana. To evaluate the reliability of the data collected with the Raspberry Pi computers, the study conducted technology-based estimation of ridership, OD flows, wait time, and travel time for a comparison with ground truth data (passenger surveys, manual data counts, and bus travel times). This study introduced the use of a wireless Wi-Fi scanning device for transit data collection, called a Smart Station. It combines an innovative set of hardware and software to create a non-intrusive and passive data collection mechanism. Through the field testing and comparison evaluation with ground truth data, the Smart Station produced accurate estimates of ridership, origin-destination characteristics, wait times, and travel times. Ridership data has traditionally been collected through a combination of manual surveys and Automatic Passenger Counter (APC) systems, which can be time-consuming and expensive, with limited capabilities to produce real-time data. The Smart Station shows promise as an accurate and cost-effective alternative. The advantages of using Smart Station over traditional data collection methods include the following: (1) Wireless, automated data collection and retrieval, (2) Real-time observation of passenger behavior, (3)...
